Colt World Series comes to Marion in 2018

PONY Baseball and the PONY North Zone are proud to announce that, for the first time, the Colt World Series will be coming to Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois August 3-8, 2018. PONY Baseball’s second-longest tenured World Series event, the Colt World Series will be hosted by the Frontier League’s Southern Illinois Miners.

“PONY is committed to providing a first class baseball World Series experience,” stated Abraham Key, PONY Baseball and Softball President and CEO. “Marion has all the tangibles for a great experience: passionate fan base, community leadership, a minor league baseball stadium and PONY history. We look forward to Marion hosting the Colt League World Series and sharing a great brand of baseball with Southern Illinois.”

Located at the 1000 Miners Drive in Marion, Illinois, Rent One Park is a leading-edge stadium with a seating capacity of 7,000. The field’s surface is made of synthetic turf and the field dimensions are the perfect size for Colt League play. Fans will be able to enjoy two picnic gardens, three concession stands, a kids fun zone, a miniature golf course and more, as they take in the exciting action of the 65th annual Colt World Series.

“Rent One Park, the Southern Illinois Miners’ stadium, will provide a feel of Major League Baseball as it is home to the Southern Illinois Miners, a franchise of the Frontier League,” said Steve Miller, PONY North Zone Vice President. “This facility is a state-of-the-art baseball stadium with artificial surface and offers an electronic scoreboard and jumbotron to enhance the experience for the players and fans.”

“The Miners are extremely proud to announce that Rent One Park will be hosting the 2018 Colt League World Series,” said Mike Pinto, Manager of the Southern Illinois Miners. “The Colt division is the 16U division of PONY Baseball, which I was proud to coach in both in Hoffman Estates, Illinois and in Granite Bay, California so many years ago. Together, with the City of Marion and Visit SI, 10 teams from around the country and four from the international pool will play for six days to find a champion. We are excited to bring this to Marion.”

One hundred and twenty miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri, Marion, Illinois is a vibrant destination for anything one can imagine. Over 120,000 residents call the Carbondale-Marion-Herrin, Illinois Combined Statistical Area home, which is the sixth-most populous in Illinois. Tourists enjoy hunting and fishing in Williamson County, most notably on nearly-7,000 acre Crab Orchard Lake, but there are other sporting events, arts and shops to take in. Nearby Carbondale, Illinois is home to Southern Illinois University, a U.S. News & World Report ranked National University.

“Marion, as the hub of the universe, is a logical place for the Colt Baseball World Series,” said Robert Butler, Mayor of Marion. “We are pleased and proud that it is happening. We look forward to a magnificent World Series, when the time comes. I want to thank everyone who has participated in making this possible. The people and the City of Marion are indebted to each and every one of you.”

Fans will remember European Zone Champion the Netherlands’ historic run at the 2017 Colt World Series. Following a 6-0 victory in the championship game over West Zone Champion Upland, California, the Netherlands capped off an undefeated run at the Colt World Series and claimed the first PONY World Series event title in the PONY European Zone’s 16-year history. Netherlands starting pitcher Luuk Ter Beek shined on the mound, pitching 11.1 shutout innings, while picking up wins over Lafayette, Indiana and Upland.
