Colt World Series Day 5 Recap

GM #16: Levittown, Puerto Rico 7  Brownsville, Texas 4

Caribbean Zone Champion Levittown, Puerto Rico struck early and hung on late to defeat a tenacious South Zone Champion Brownsville, Texas team to advance to the Colt World Series championship game, following a 7-4 victory in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Brownsville had a golden opportunity for a big inning in the top of the first. With one out, Heriberto Eduardo Garza singled, before Darren Ramirez, Heriberto Emanuel Garza and Heriberto Maldonado walked in three-consecutive at-bats. Texas scored a run in the process, but left the bases loaded, after back-to-back strikeouts.

Levittown countered in the bottom of the first with three runs of its own thanks to a Juan Montero RBI single, Sabin Ceballos scoring on an error and another RBI single by Joskar Feliciano.

The Caribbean Zone Champions added to their lead in the bottom of the third, when Gabriel Medina singled and Ceballos walked, before Montero crushed a triple to centerfield. Medina and Ceballos scored in the process, and Brownsville error allowed Montero to score from third, putting Puerto Rico up 6-1.

As it had done all tournament long, Brownsville continued to battle back. Pinch hitter Victor Estrada led off the top of the fifth with a walk. Two at-bats later, Emanuel Garza smacked a double into left field, scoring Estrada from first (6-2). In the top of the sixth, Sandal Garcia came into the game to pinch hit and came through with a clutch hit for Texas. His two-RBI double to center put the team within two runs (6-4).

Puerto Rico added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, when Eduardo Peña scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-4, which proved to be the final score. Eduardo Garza made one last effort for his team in the top of the seventh thanks to his one-out double, but a groundout and strikeout ended the game.

Ceballos and Montero paced Levittown with two hits apiece, while Montero also led the team with three RBI. Eduardo Garza led the way for Brownsville at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Luis Rivera picked up the win for Puerto Rico, going five innings complete, allowing two runs on two hits and six walks, while striking out four. Dylan Luna completed the save, going 1.1 scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and struck out two.

The win advanced Levittown into the 2018 Colt World Series championship game, which is slated for 7 p.m. CT/US in Marion, Illinois. The loss eliminated Brownsville with a record of 3-2.

Following a lengthy rain delay at Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois Tuesday afternoon, tournament officials postponed semifinal Game #17 between Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Seoul, Korea and Southern Illinois.

Depending upon the completion of the Southern Illinois Miners’ game tonight will determine tomorrow’s resume time. If the Miners complete their game tonight, the Korea-Southern Illinois match up will resume at 10:00 a.m. CT/US tomorrow. If the Southern Illinois Miners do NOT complete their game tonight, the Korea-Southern Illinois game resume at 9:00 a.m. CT/US tomorrow.
